MUSIC RESPONSE 001 is the first in a series of art installations by Smith & Lyall, the artists behind the epic, surreal visuals for The Chemical Brothers live shows. These exhibitions see their work for the iconic show re-imagined in different contexts.
In this first incarnation of MUSIC RESPONSE, a collection of costumes and films from The Chemical Brothers acclaimed live shows will be exhibited in the unlikely setting of an empty shop on the high street of Wincanton, Somerset. The shop will also see the premiere of a new audio-visual installation, featuring a track from the Chemical Brothers new album ‘For That Beautiful Feeling’.
The show is in collaboration with costume designer Kate Tabor who, with her team, hand made all the outfits, which were co-designed with Smith & Lyall.
For three weeks in October visitors and passers-by will unexpectedly encounter extraordinary, dream-like characters through the windows of the re-purposed shop. Although some of the costumes were shown at the Design Museum in London as part of the landmark Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers exhibition in 2021, the majority are on public view for the first time.
“We’re using the windows for their original use of getting the attention of passers-by, with the aim of adding something surprising to their day which inspires or entertains them” said Smith & Lyall.
“This is a unique opportunity to become completely immersed in the electrifying world of the Chemical Brothers live visuals. Join us for an exploration into their sound and style, as seen through the costumes” said Kate Tabor.
The exhibition runs over three weekends from the 14th October at Commerce House, Wincanton, ahead of the forthcoming Chemical Brothers UK Arena tour which begins on 26th October 2023. All Smith & Lyall’s visual work has been produced by Black Dog Films and Ridley Scott Associates, who are supporting the exhibition.
