Report explores how the middle-aged (and senior) demographics in China are confidently embracing their next life journey, transforming the perception of aging through their wisdom and adventurous spirit

Dentsu Creative presents the Silver Generation Trends Report 2025, exploring how the middle-aged (and senior) demographics in China are confidently embracing their next life journey, transforming the perception of aging through their wisdom and adventurous spirit.

With China experiencing an aging population, a dynamic new 'silver force' is rising. The generation, born between 1960 and 1975 (now aged 50 to 65), has been shaped by an era of collective values and significant social shifts. Following years of career building and wealth generation, this population now stands out as the one with the largest total assets and the least debt, along with higher educational credentials and a richer cultural understanding than past generations.

In the second chapter of their lives, these mature individuals are breaking away from conventional societal expectations. They are prioritising personal well-being, discovering diverse lifestyles, and looking for ways to make a positive impact on society. The new silver generation is redefining what it means to live in their later years, embracing a philosophy centred on: “Valuing our own happiness, living for ourselves, and celebrating a new chapter in life.”

Trend 1

Living on My Terms

Beyond the Age Narrative

The shift towards individuality is shaping the lives of not only young people but also the new silver generation. Growing up alongside China’s swift progress, they see themselves as 'drivers of change,' fully convinced of the impact that individual resolve and actions can have.

They push back against the societal norms that dictate age-related timelines, instead choosing to define aging on their own terms, staying true to themselves as they venture into new experiences, ready to move forward in their life journey.

Trend 2

Proactive Wellness

Taking Control of Time

As health consciousness increases and healthcare services advance, more silvers are adopting a proactive approach to managing their health instead of simply responding to medical issues as they arise.

Everyday living is being transformed into health-oriented practices, as they embrace modern technology for physical help and approach previously 'taboo' topics like menopause with greater poise and comfort.

Trend 3

Connections Reimagined

Breaking Free from Social Scripts, Renewing Relationships

In the midst of life transitions, older adults often experience shifts in their social relationships and the need to redefine their family responsibilities.

The new silver generation is seeking balance between their roles within the family and their sense of self, while they engage in building new social relationships that enrich their lives and help mitigate feelings of loneliness.

Trend 4

Wild at Heart

If Not Now, When?

Presented with numerous alternatives and the inevitable progression of time, they have chosen to engage with present-day trends.

Just like their younger peers, they immerse themselves in dynamic and appealing entertainment, bravely venturing into the unknown aspects of life and wholeheartedly connecting with the beat of modern society.

Trend 5

Self Compensation

The Ultimate Indulgence

The new silver generation, shaped by a past of material scarcity and a commitment to hard work for their families, has not had the chance to enjoy self-indulgence.

Now, with a solid economic foundation and established social benefits, this generation has embraced a more progressive view on spending, ready to allocate funds towards their interests and improved experiences.

Trend 6

Legacy Builders

Serving Society Anew

Being one of the first demographics to enjoy the benefits of China’s reform and opening-up, the new silver generation has experienced a dramatic increase in their quality of life, fostering a strong sense of gratitude and national pride.

Once retired, they focus on volunteering to share Chinese pride with youth and contribute to a better society for future generations.

Chris Chen, chief creative officer of dentsu China and CEO of Dentsu Creative says, “The new silver generation significantly shapes the cultural landscape, yet their substantial spending power and commercial influence are often overlooked by marketers. In this report, we explore the values, cultural perspectives, entertainment interests, and social behaviours of this new generation, offering a new lens through which to view their captivating journey into what is referred to as their second life. In parallel, we draw upon our collective know-how and talents to connect brands with the new silver consumer demographic and their communities.”
