Octopus filmmaker goes back to the '70s for the distinctive video

Octopus filmmaker Vicky Lawton blesses us with her distinctive vision in the latest music video ‘Free Yourself’ from singer, songwriter Jessie Ware. The piece oozes a very 1970s rock n roll aesthetic, think David Bowie’s Hunky Dory with a touch of Kate Bush. Vicky’s visuals going hand in hand with Jessie’s lyrics about expression and individuality, we see like-minded people gather at a stately home in what feels like a ritual of expression. Jessie’s red dress pops off the screen in contrast to the dark greens of her surroundings giving her authority and power, while she sings almost like a preacher to those who have come to set themselves free.

Here’s what Vicky had to say - “As soon as I heard the track, I knew it had to be a celebration. A moment of joy, freedom of expression and individuality - it’s all there in the lyrics - 'free yourself'. Imagining a gathering of like-minded free-loving folk at a stately home, very '70s rock 'n' roll - but with a pinch of the occult thrown in. Knowing I’d want to make the tone provocative - I needed to ensure there was the class and sophistication in the visuals to keep it chic. That meant keeping mystery and intrigue at the forefront, using references of decadence, silhouettes to tease and a heavenly glow throughout. That’s where working with Rob Jarvis, DOP was a delightful experience - he has an eye for controlled compositions and a painterly effect when it comes to the use of light. Within this setting, Jessie is a true performer. Her ability to be the authoritarian preacher to the crowd of dancers in the start of the film, and get within the group towards the end and let loose was masterful to watch. “

The music video features choreography that feels natural and organic, not over rehearsed or robotic, allowing the dancers to have fun and glow. Vicky allows room and space for each performer bringing a sense of personality and individuality to each person, and very fitting with the spirit of the lyrics and music.
