Joris Debeij is the latest addition to the growing RSA Films Amsterdam roster.
New RSA Films Amsterdam signing Joris Debeij is a stalwart of non-fiction short filmmaking. With three Emmy Awards, Joris is the most awarded Dutch filmmaker in the US.
Joris’ short films and documentaries have screened at numerous festivals including official selection and Grand Jury nominations at SXSW, Camerimage, Sundance, Los Angeles Short Film Festival, and the Young Director Awards – for which he picked up Silver. His commercial clients have included Nike, Apple, Hoka One One and The US Olympic Committee.
With a background in journalism, and having moved to Los Angeles, Joris became interested in film and the expression of the individual in a social/cultural context. "Connecting with people has been always a central part of my films, building bridges, perspective, these are the things I love to explore while making films,” said Joris. “When I came to Los Angeles, I pursued the craft of journalism that segued me very naturally into making documentary short films. I wanted to explore a new culture, social system, history, that is around me and through filmmaking.”
European managing director Ross Plummer said: “At RSA Films Amsterdam and the wider Ridley Scott Creative Group, we look for directors that are capable of longer form content to fill the entertainment sphere, and Joris has this in spades. He’s the perfect hybrid of ads and films and will do very well within the group, both for agencies, brands, and beyond.”
Regardless of what’s on trend, Joris’ filmmaking niche is using elements of realism, scripting, and biography in visual storytelling. You can view more of Joris' work here.
