Meet Covert: Great Work, No Faff

From the humble beginnings of two freelancers seizing a gap in the market for a fuss-free studio, to now producing show-stopping work for Captain Morgan, SK-II, Seedlip, and being close to finishing their first long form project, We are Covert is only just getting started. 

Why Covert? 

Covert seemed an apt name for the VFX/post production studio founded by Toby Wheeler and Simon Dewey in 2017, as they both cut their teeth freelancing for big brands and agencies under white label.

After years of freelancing - and an increasing workload - both found themselves in a position to expand and take the leap to set up their own post production studio. They agreed that this studio would cut out the faff and focus on raw talent and creativity whilst valuing the team, and so We are Covert was born.  

WFH Before it was Cool

By honing in on creatively talented individuals, they were able to shift their focus away from fancy office space and into people. As a result, they built a complete remote working pipeline from scratch. At the time, working from home was a new and unique concept (perhaps in reflection they had a premonition). This wasn’t without its hurdles - Simon recalls that whilst this unconventional approach was challenging, they stuck to their guns and found that ‘by not being limited to the constraints of location, we could bring in some seriously talented individuals, offer them a flexible work/life balance whilst as a studio, be agile and offer a highly competitive service, producing work that rivals the biggest studios’. It was from these grass roots that the studio has grown to where it is today. 

The Now 

We Are Covert are now five years into this adventure, and have built a motley crew of outstanding creative talent from Europe to South America, producing motion design & VFX for commercials, content, music videos and long-form on behalf of brands, agencies and production houses across the globe. Additionally, a producer’s recent relocation to the US has allowed We Are Covert to expand their reach across the Atlantic and establish a base to work more closely with their American clients. Despite this growth, the studio still embodies the shared ethos -  a people first, fuss free studio. The co-founders are still very much in the thick of the projects and are regularly the last ones standing at the bar (or the last ones on the Zoom Friday beers, as even their social calendar is mainly remote!)

The Future

So what does the future hold for We are Covert? By continuing to foster the growth of their artists, embracing new technologies, motivating the team with a flexible work/life balance and preserving a dynamic creative environment, they are united in their shared goal of becoming a leading post house whose name is firmly in the credits.
