KODE is delighted to announce the signing of director, Lu Xiao Wei, for UK representation. Lu’s work embodies unique storytelling with a focus on human identity, paired with striking visuals that draw inspiration from her East Asian heritage, intertwined with contemporary British culture.
Lu shows a unique understanding of youth culture across different continents and strives to communicate this using fashion, culture and social issues to shape her style. She caught the eye of KODE with her high-concept, performance-driven work that highlights rich, textured, and empowering narratives.
Lu trained for 11 years to be a professional ballet dancer. Whilst at ballet school, when focusing on choreography and directing dance, she was inspired to pursue a creative career, and shifted her focus behind the scenes. Lu’s portfolio now boasts collaborations with high-profile clients such as Nike, Meta, Bumble, Lego, Samsung, P&G, Depop, Estée Lauder, Audible, and more. Her short films have garnered international acclaim; receiving the Best Sound Award at the New York City Independent Film Festival and featuring at prestigious events like the BAFTA-qualifying London Short Film Festival, Aesthetica Film Festival, Chicago's Blow-Up Arthouse Film Festival, Berlin Fashion Film Festival, Miami Fashion Film Festival, and Manchester Film Festival.
Lu aims to give voices to those unheard and make a path for difference, in all her work. Her short documentary, "The Filial Daughter," that paints an intimate portrait of professional mourners in Taiwan, was an official selection at the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival 2020 and has been showcased on renowned platforms like NOWNESS and i-D. Lu's work not only captivates audiences but also sparks important conversations, making her a standout director in the international film community.
Upon signing to KODE, Lu said, “I am incredibly excited to join forces with KODE - a production company that not only shares my vision and passion for storytelling but also embodies the creativity, innovation, and dedication that I believe are essential to producing exceptional work. Together, I believe we have the potential to create boundary-breaking, meaningful, and beautiful films that resonate with audiences on a profound level. I look forward to this collaboration and the amazing projects we will bring to life.”
Jack Goodwin, KODE’s co-founder and executive producer added, “We believe Lu is a stellar addition to the KODE roster. When we first met earlier this year it was abundantly clear how deeply passionate she is about telling creative stories, and how driven she is to refine her craft, through our partnership. She is definitely one to watch, and we look forward to piloting her career to new bounds.”
