The much anticipated vignette premiered at Friday’s opening of the 36th annual Göteborg International Film Festival. The festival dragon, which has played a key role in the two latest films, has now become a few years older.
This year's production is produced by animation studio Milford Film & Animation, who brought in production companies FLX 2.0 and againstallodds as co-producers. In June 2012, Milford Film was contacted by the film festival and since then intense work has been done, ranging from the development of the story and characters to the 3D process of building and integrating the dragon into the live action footage. The concept of having the festival’s dragon logotype come to life is developed by advertising agency SCP. "It has been both fun and challenging to put together such a big production without any budget and it is great to see so many people chipping in and wanting to do something big. That the film is screened at the largest film festival in Scandinavia is just pure bonus," says Johan Gustafsson, Executive Producer at Milford Film & Animation.
Director Fredrik Falck, FLX 2.0 tells what this year’s film is about: "A hero, played by Fares Fares, and his motley crew ashore on a deserted beach with the mission to map unexplored area. They struggle through the inland’s deep terrain, but with the feeling of being watched. In the end, they stand face to face with a creature, and it was not at all what they expected."
Alongside Fares, Swedish actors Peter Eggers, Anna Åström and Alexander Stocks all have leading roles in the film.
The adventure is loosely based on Olaus Magnus adventures and his mapping of the Nordic countries. In the original map "Carta Marina" he depicts a variety of weird creatures and wonderful places. "We thought this would be a great place to tell a story and show some of the things he might have encountered,” says co-director Derek Picken, againstallodds.
Göteborg International Film Festival is the leading international film festival in Scandinavia and the main window for new Nordic films. The film festival takes place January 25th to February 4th, 2013.
