Highly acclaimed director, Andy Margetson has joined Dark Energy’s roster for representation. The multi award-winning director specialises in working with music, choreography and movement and has created spots for top brands: Canon, Sony, Nike, Timberland, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Alfa Romeo, Vodafone, the BBC and Louis Vuitton.
‘We are delighted to have such an incredible and globally celebrated talent join our roster’, comments Dark Energy founder Matt Brown. ‘I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with Andy on many exciting projects to come.’
‘Signing to Dark Energy just clicked for me. It was instinct. I like the scale and feel of the company and the work that they do.’ reflects the director.
Margetson has made a number of shorts including Help Point (10 festival awards now being distributed internationally) Reborn (over 10 million views, 3 awards) and Lil Buck with Icons of Modern Art (over 10 million views, 4 awards). His latest dance short ‘DUET’ has been Vimeo ‘staff picked’ and was the subject of a CNN review by renowned Arts Correspondent Nick Glass.
Growing up all over the world (his father was a diplomat), he was influenced by dance from a young age, ‘My dad was a huge dance fan and when I was twelve, he took me to see the Bejart Ballet, that really inspired me,’ remembers Margetson. He has worked with some of the world’s most celebrated dancers (Lil Buck, Storyboard P, Lauren Cuthbertson, Yasmine Naghdi and The Royal Ballet to name a few), as well as some of the world’s best choreographers. ‘You get to work with people who are so brilliant at what they do. They’re at the very top of the pyramid and they’ve sacrificed so much to get there. The crew are always transfixed. It’s a total honour to work with these people, a different level’.
Across his remarkable career, the notably humble director, has also worked with many of the most exciting actors and models on the planet, including Kate Hudson, Idris Elba, Sacha Baron Cohen, Snoop Dogg and Karlie Kloss.
His recent work for Nowness and Fondation Lois Vuitton stars the incredibly talented jooker from Memphis dancer, Lil Buck. Demonstrating the fluidity and elegance with where street-dance and ballet collide, Margetson comments that, ‘during the first take of Buck entering the Picasso room, his performance hit a new level - that moment when he repeatedly lowers his head facing away from the painting - it gave me goose-bumps and I knew we had something special.’
Brown adds, ‘Andy has a gift for capturing movement on film. His films are mesmerizing. Somehow he captures the beauty of dance, whilst retaining an edge that is incredibly engaging for a contemporary audience.’
The director concludes, ‘I am looking forward to expanding my body of quality UK work and to collaborating with more inspiring talent across dance, music and film through Dark Energy.’
