Commissioned to create both moving image and stills identity for Issey Miyake’s new Nuit D’Issey men's fragrance, artist Ryan Hopkinson chose to evoke a continuous journey into the night constructed through a series of counterpoised visual Haikus.
In respect to Issey Miyake’s blend of art and philosophy the film draws inspiration from the elegant textural design of the fragrance bottle. The matte finish of the bottle’s cap inspired the geological qualities of the mountain range whilst the opaque brushed glass bottle was taken to reflect the surface of a moonlit ocean.
Key for the brand was the idea of uniting the natural elements of land, sea and air to suggest the sensory origins of the scent. To sustain this organic feeling the film was shot substantially in-camera, requiring considered collaboration with the art team to design a scaled miniature landscape, lunar environment and execute an underwater dive sequence with the enigmatic figure of the Issey Miyake man.
The campaign was launched in Tokyo with an exclusive multi-sensory installation event and will roll out across TV and Print globally from September.
