The team from Five to Sixty has launched Curveball, a new production concept with a high end roster of directors and artists. They have already made a splash with several productions to kick off the year, and a roster made up of founding directors Ben Strang, Yaara Sumeruk, Krista Liney, and Ryan Scott. Their portfolios include brands such as Capital One, Geico, United Airlines, and Babel.
The name stems from a frantic call from an agency producer to EP Jack Rosman. “She said ‘we got a curveball for ya.’ And I realised most of our job is handling curveballs that are thrown at us. It felt like the perfect name for what we do every day. It has a sense of mischief. But it also applies to both the creative and the logistical side of filmmaking. We encourage each of our directors to put their own spin on the creative, to really make it a spot that only they can direct. And of course, the inevitable curveballs that accompany making a film.”
With offices in New Orleans, New York, and Bogota, Colombia, they truly have a global presence. “We’ve shot all over the world, in over 15 countries,” says EP TJ Tamayo.
While they can shoot anywhere, the goal of Curveball is to keep things more intimate, “Five to Sixty has enjoyed the roster-less, freelance director model. But we wanted a roster because we enjoy building long term relationships with our directors, and growing together.” says Nic Weinfeld, the CEO of Five to Sixty.
“Our goal at Curveball is to attract creatives that think outside of the box. Concepts with unexpected twists and turns. We feel that all of our directors embody that ethos, and those are the kind of stories we want to tell.” Says EP Juan Sebastion (Sebas) Baron.
Curveball is repped by Ann Asprodites in the Southeast, Doug Sherin in the West Coast, Maureen Butler in the Midwest, and Brandon Pico in the Northeast.
