Evening showcased women in the Film and Advertising industry by screening a variety of music videos, short films and animation

Papaya London hosted its first Papaya Juice Session, in collaboration with Girls In Film. The evening showcased women in the Film and Advertising industry by screening a variety of music videos, short films and animation.

The evening was led by writer and journalist Olivia Atkins, who facilitated a fantastic panel of femme creatives. Olivia was joined by; Becs Rainey, Head of Girls In Film, Hollie Iles, senior creative at Havas, director and photographer Jasmine De Silva, music video director Gabriella Kingsley and narrative director, Tulsi Shivaanand. The night saw a brilliant screening of Nina Simone's I Put A Spell On You (Kingsley), short horror Widow (Shivaanand), experimental short Birthright (GiF) and To Infinity (Havas); as well as featuring stunning prints photographed by De Silva.

Many important topics were discussed throughout the evening. Mostly conversation about the position of femme creatives in the industry, how to change this and the importance of this change. The Papaya London office was full of buzzing creatives ranging from new to experienced filmmakers, sparking new relationships and hopefully some exciting projects to come. Head of GiF, Becs Rainy believes “It's rare to get this kind of energy in a room, and [Becs] can't thank Papaya, my fellow panellists and our audience enough for that. The mutual respect for our different media across advertising, shorts, music videos and photography sparked important conversations about femme representation in the industry as a whole”.

Director and Photographer Jasmine De Silva explains that “as a very nervous public speaker it was so empowering and encouraging to be surrounded by other female filmmakers who spoke with such passion and confidence. When freelance life can be isolating at times, discussions like these remind you of the incredible community we have around us”. Director Tulsi Shivaanand goes on to express how “it was so empowering to be surrounded by female filmmakers breaking new ground in the industry, especially women of colour!”. Gabriella Kingsley adds how ‘watch[ing] women succeeding and excelling in their own individual fields is so amazing. I hope to be involved in more spaces like this that allow women to feel safe, heard and uplifted’.

The evening is perfectly summarised by Havas Senior Creative, Hollie Iles who states “It was a privilege to sit alongside some incredible creatives for a juicy discussion about women in the world of production. Great company, gorgeous work and let’s get more girls in film.”

Papaya Films would like to thank everyone who attended the first Papaya Juice Session, in collaboration with Girls In Film, and hopes to have the same good vibes for the next session.

Papaya’s Head of Talent, Pilar Muro concludes that “it was a wonderful evening, full of creative women from the industry. I am infinitely grateful to the panellists for sharing with us their experiences and amazing work. I hope everyone who came, left as inspired as I did.”
