OnePlus Nord Gives More Than Expected in Playful Ad

KODE's Jara Moravec directs the mobile phone brand's nostalgic campaign

Director Jara Moravec of the London based production studio KODE has worked with mobile phone brand, OnePlus Nord to create their newest brand campaign. The ad is the latest instalment in what looks to be a  long-standing working relationship between KODE and OnePlus, following the success of past campaigns with associated brand Oppo which generated success across all of the brands markets in Asia and Europe. 

Manu Yang at One Plus: “For us, we really wanted to showcase how the OnePlus Nord can be used every day, but in a film which was playful and energetic. Jara and the team at Kode did a fantastic job of doing exactly that, and really helped us elevate the comedy in the script throughout.”

Vibrant colours, and a combination of realism and on-screen mobile phone graphics bring the campaign to life. Accompanied by sports commentator narration by Ian Danter, the protagonist’s daily routine is enlivened by his new smartphone capabilities. Throughout the day, the OnePlus Nord is used for reminders, gameplay, photography, social media and music, showing its dynamism and that it’s ‘A little more than you’d expect’.

Jara Moravec, director, KODE: “This project was a director’s dream. Shot in colourful Buenos Aires with an incredible team, in prep we pushed through summer heat waves only to wake up to two rainy shoot days. Fun fact - not a single shot in the ad was shot with real sunshine.” Moravec added, “I wanted to explore how we can narrate this story, taking a page or two from a comic book. It was an interesting challenge to take a look at all the camera moves, so prominent in today’s advertising, and deploy them in a way that supports the story. Plus I really enjoyed using Fiverr to find a group of r’n’b singers in Nigeria to sing the ends lines to the ad”.

The youthful, playful and nostalgic feel of the campaign was achieved through the use of colourful, vintage-style clothing and aesthetics. It alludes to a time gone by but simultaneously looks ahead to the future with the release of the newest OnePlus Nord phone, which is breaking away from the mundane and is standing out from its crowded market, positioning itself as the product of choice for the younger generation.

Jack Goodwin, executive producer, KODE: “We’ve been strengthening our relationship with Oppo over the last year; so far with five commercials under our belts together and a 6th in pre production currently. But this was the first with One Plus following the two brands merging last year, and I’m really proud of what we have created together with the brand. Jara of course comes into his own, and has used this campaign opportunity to further define his style following the success of his campaign for Swyft last year. Jara was supported by his regular DOP Filip Marek and producer Gwilym Gwillim, both of whom I can’t thank enough for their commitment to the project.”

The 1.30’ ad is released globally across all One Plus Nord channels.
