Q> What are the main qualities of Costa Rica?

Gustavo> Costa Rica boasts an array of remarkable features, from its stunning beaches and verdant forests to its captivating jungles and breath-taking waterfalls. Moreover, the country prides itself on its rich ethnic diversity and a skilled workforce that operates efficiently without the constraints of union affiliations.

With its abundant variety of landscapes, flora, and fauna, Costa Rica offers an ideal setting for various filming locations. Accompanied by a highly capable team, the nation stands ready to provide top-tier talent and optimal shooting spots for any production.

Q> What would you say are the top locations in Costa Rica?

Gustavo> Costa Rica boasts an extensive array of diverse and captivating locations. Encompassing everything from lush forests, imposing volcanoes, and mysterious caverns to cascading waterfalls, the country's landscape is a filmmaker's dream.

However, it's the unparalleled beaches that truly steal the show. With their pristine white sands, crystal-clear waters, rocky formations, and awe-inspiring sunsets, these beaches offer a visual spectacle that's hard to match.

Beyond its picturesque landscapes, Costa Rica also stands as a global biodiversity hotspot, hosting an impressive 6% of the world's total biodiversity. This remarkable wealth is concentrated within our compact territory, which showcases a remarkable range of climates and vegetation types. Such diversity provides filmmakers with an unparalleled palette of natural settings to choose from.

Q> What location would you say is most popular?

Gustavo> Caribbean beaches and its tropical jungles. Also its waterfalls and the Arenal Volcano.

Q> Which location would you describe as the biggest attribute to local production?

Gustavo> The beaches unquestionably rank as the most frequently employed filming locales within the country. We have island looks with mainland comfort.

Q> Explain the climate and the best/worst times to shoot in Costa Rica?

Gustavo> Costa Rica offers an exceptional filming environment owing to its distinct climate patterns. The country experiences a singular dry season, extending from December through March, with April serving as a transitional month. Subsequently, the rainy season takes hold from May to August. Our Caribbean has a different climate system that has its summer in September and October.

Q> What specific work permits/Visas are required to shoot in Costa Rica?

Gustavo> No visa or work permits required for USA, European or Canadian citizens or residents. Shooting permits usually take between four to 15 days depending on selection.

Q> How is the infrastructure in Costa Rica for supporting large productions? Access to high-level cameras and kit, casting, crews, studios etc.

Gustavo> Costa Rica: Infrastructure has been developing steadily in Costa Rica, making it increasingly conducive for large productions. Access to high-level cameras, equipment, and technical resources has improved, thanks to companies like LCA Productions that provide state-of-the-art gear and facilities. The country has experienced professionals and crew members who can offer their expertise across various aspects of production. While the options for studios are limited, the diverse natural landscapes more than compensate for this.

Costa Rica offers a range of casting options, including ethnically diverse talent pools. Remember that while the infrastructure is improving, it might not be as extensive as in more established production hubs. Collaborating with local production companies, like LCA Productions in Costa Rica can greatly streamline the process by providing access to resources and expertise that cater to the specific needs of large-scale productions.

Q> What have been your biggest/most successful production in Costa Rica to date?

Gustavo> Costa Rica:

Q> As an outsider, what would you say are the biggest Dos and Don’ts in the region?

Gustavo> Dos:

  • Respect the Environment: Costa Rica is known for its natural beauty and commitment to sustainability. Follow eco-friendly practices, like avoiding single-use plastics and staying on designated paths in natural areas.
  • Politeness: Ticos (Costa Ricans) value politeness and friendliness. Greet with a 'hola' or 'buenos días' and use 'por favor' (please) and 'gracias' (thank you) often.
  • Adventure Responsibly: Costa Rica offers thrilling adventure activities. Ensure you book with reputable tour operators that adhere to safety standards.
  • Learn Some Spanish: While many locals speak English, making an effort to communicate in Spanish is appreciated and can enhance your experience.

Don'ts:

  • Disregard Wildlife: Costa Rica's biodiversity is incredible, but touching or feeding wild animals can harm them and you. Admire from a distance.
  • Overpack: The climate is warm, so pack light and comfortable clothing. Fancy attire isn't necessary; casual is the norm.

Q> What would be your number one tip to any coming to Costa Rica to shoot a campaign/film?

Gustavo> My number one tip for anyone coming to Costa Rica to shoot a campaign or film would be to immerse yourself in the local culture and collaborate closely with local production experts. Engage with the vibrant communities, traditions, and landscapes of these countries. This not only adds authenticity to your project but also opens up opportunities for unique storylines and visuals.

Working hand-in-hand with local production professionals, like LCA Productions in Costa Rica, will give you invaluable insights into navigating logistics, permits, and cultural nuances. Their expertise will help you make the most of your time and resources, ensuring a successful and memorable production experience.

Q> Where would you suggest a foreign production stay while they are in Costa Rica?

Gustavo> In San Jose the Intercontinental hotel or the AC Marriott.

Q> Where are the best bars/restaurants? Any hidden gems you could suggest?

Gustavo> In San José you can’t miss La Esquina de Buenos Aires: A classic Argentine steakhouse known for its excellent cuts of meat.

  • Explore National Parks: Costa Rica is renowned for its national parks and protected areas. Don't miss iconic spots like Manuel Antonio, Arenal Volcano, and Corcovado.
  • Go Surfing: With its long coastline, Costa Rica offers excellent surfing opportunities for beginners and experts alike. Spots like Tamarindo and Dominical are popular among surfers.
  • Zip-lining and Canopy Tours: Experience the rainforest from a unique perspective by trying zip-lining or canopy tours. Monteverde Cloud Forest is a great place for this.

Remember to respect local customs, follow sustainable tourism practices, and make an effort to interact with locals. Costa Rica offers unique and enriching experiences beyond filming, making your visit truly unforgettable.
