Kitty McNamee’s latest documentary, Elegy, has made the official selection at the 14th Annual Video Art & Experimental Film Festival (VAEFF), to be held at New York City’s iconic Cinema Village. Appearing in the festival’s THE PULSE section, Elegy joins a line up of boundary-pushing works, exploring the intersection of visual narrative, fashion, music, and experimental film.
Against the breath taking backdrop of the Taos Mesa, Elegy is a reflective exploration of movement, nature, and philosophy - offering audiences a fresh lens on the growing cultural trend of leaving urban hubs to reconnect with the natural world. VAEFF, renowned for programs such as Beauty, Sex and Shame, and Between Fashion & Music, provides a fitting platform for McNamee’s introspective and visually captivating film.
At the heart of Elegy is the personal experience of choreographer Zak Ryan Schlegel, a native New Mexican of Mestizo Mexico, Apache, and German descent, whose artistry is deeply rooted in cultural exchange and belonging. Drawing on a rich heritage and unique perspectives, Schlegel has collaborated with leading artists such as The Weeknd and Shen Wei Dance Arts, solidifying his notable reputation in contemporary dance. McNamee’s direction captures the spiritual and communal essence of Schlegel’s creative journey, delving into the idea that only by staying true to one's own voice can true creativity be sustained. As Elegy continues to gain momentum on the festival circuit, McNamee’s fresh approach to storytelling underscores her celebrated ability to merge choreography and cinematic artistry.
