Colourists at Studio RM, Jamie Noble and Natalia Jaeger, pick their top five fall fashion campaigns with new visual styles
We are Jamie Noble and Natalia Jaeger, colourists at Studio RM, a post-production house that specialise in artistic colour-grading and high-quality finishing for photography and film within the fashion, beauty, and culture space. The studio is known for discovering new talent and collaborating with some of the most renowned and innovative figures working across visual culture. We have chosen five new fall campaigns by directors who we believe are bringing new visual styles to the fashion world, and who have created beautiful, aesthetically-nuanced commercials...
Calvin Klein - 'Fall 2022'
Production: One Thirty Eight Productions
Director: Alasdair McLellan
Post: Studio RM
Jamie > Alasdair and I have been working together for years, and this was our second consecutive collaboration with Calvin Klein. His photography and film work is usually punctuated by warm, sun-drenched tones that he combines with grainy film textures. With this commercial, Alasdair wanted to capture the mundane, everyday movements of New Yorkers, which is reflected in the much cooler grade. There are also a bunch of high-contrast, black-and-white style studio shots that nod to the history and style of the Calvin Klein brand.
G-Star RAW - 'Hardcore Denim'
Agency: The Family
Production: Stink London
Director: Felix Brady
Natalia > There is such a slick playfulness to this new G-Star campaign, which features celebrities of superhuman size, treating the city like their playground. The emphasis on murky blues and shiny greys really highlights the campaign’s abstract and surreal vision of city life.
Moncler Grenoble - 'Daynamic'
Production: Division
Director: Thibaut Grevet
Natalia > This is such a dynamic campaign. I love the mix of treatment and overlays, plus the grade is fantastic - especially those fiery skies and computerised, fluorescent blues! The colour definitely enhances the futuristic look of the spot.
Jamie > I totally agree, it’s almost dystopian with its fast-moving skies, blurred night vision, and hilly terrain. The deep greys, browns, and purples really get across that this is a strange and unfamiliar world we’re watching.
Burberry - 'Night Creatures'
Production: Riff Raff Films
Directors: Megaforce
Post: WORK London
Sound: 750mph
Natalia > This is another great commercial from Megaforce and Burberry, released just last week. The moody and cool colour palette really helps to tell this surreal, nocturnal story.
Jamie > I agree with Natalia here, I really like the British grit and energy this clip has. I think the great grade and use of darker tones also create seamlessness between the film and the VFX additions.
Flannels - 'A/W 22'
Creative: MOX London
Director: Crown and Owls
Natalia > This campaign kicks off the new brand direction for the luxury retailer, and I think the strong cinematic style, emphasis on movement, and use of bold colours - like deep reds and pops of green - really capture the spirit and energy of Northern Soul, which the campaign is referencing.
