Senior sound designer at No.8, George Castle, dips into his five favourite examples of filmic sound in advertising
I love an audio mix that is filmic in its craft, with plenty of dynamics, and makes use of dramatic sound design. When a piece uses sound to tell a story, it creates a sonic world that instantly encapsulates you. A perfectly balanced mix can bring a film to life and help it resonate with the audience. Sound is a powerful and emotive tool in a film maker's arsenal...
Pennzoil - 'Dodge Demon'
Production: RBS Productions
Director: Ozan Biron
Agency: J Walter Thompson
This high-octane commercial really packs a punch. After watching this, all I wanted to do was to get into the studio and create big cinematic sounds. The contrast between silence and big, powerful sound keeps you hooked all the way through.
EA Sports - 'FIFA 22: Hypermotion'
Agency: In-house at EA Sports
Production: Private Island TV
Director: Chris Boyle
Post & Sound: No.8ldn
This advert is an example of how much creativity you can squeeze into two minutes. This has a beautiful balance of sound design, music and dialogue. I particularly love the portal sound design and the use of reverbs on the dialogue to transport the characters to interesting spaces.
Ford - 'Ford Ranger: Night Swimming'
Agency: AMV BBDO
Production: SMUGGLER
Director: Adam Berg
Post: nineteentwenty
Sound: Bark Soho
This sound design really creates a beautiful underwater soundscape. It is captivating yet delicate when it needs to be, and isn’t shy to be bold when it is called for.
LICADD x Stop the Spiral - 'Hey Charlie'
This advert is a perfect example of filmic sound design. The audience are shown a heart-breaking story from a first-person perspective and the anxiety-inducing sound contributes to the realism being portrayed.
Hennessy - 'A New Further'
Production: Somesuch x Anonymous
Director: Daniel Wolfe
This epic, pulse-racing journey to space really keeps you on the edge of your seat. 'A New Further' is a masterpiece of sound design and the contrast to take-off to space is beautiful. The sound design really makes you feel like you are in the capsule with him.
