Pitches are renowned for their capacity to devour resources and energy, and they’re certainly never easy. But as much as we like to complain about them, they’re still the primary way that agencies win new business. And within the spectrum, there are those that feel like a meeting of minds and those that drive people to breaking point.
Looking beyond the headline complaints about the pitch process, at this year’s LBB & Friends Beach in Cannes, LBB’s Alex Reeves spoke to a panel of experienced adland leaders to find out how they navigate it. What separates the good pitches from the bad? When do you turn down a pitch? How do you make sure you’re not burning out your people? And what do you do about pitch ideas that never run?
On-hand were an international panel, including AMV BBDO’s Xavier Rees, Johannes Leonardo’s John McCarthy, TBWA\Worldwide’s Jen Costello and Le Truc’s Bastien Baumann, who shared some of their highs and lows of pitching and the philosophies that guide them through the tricky decisions that come up.
