Here's an extra special treat for you today, courtesy of David Bass and Tom Stanford at Platinum Rye. They've been digging into some of their favourite hip hop tracks to find the original songs that inspired them.
"I’ve always loved hip hop. The culture it entails and the way the music was created through the use of samples/sampling – no matter how big or obscure," says David. "Now I’m a music supervisor I find it more exciting to discover the original tracks that have made up some of our favourite hip hop / rap tracks. A track that samples can open the audience to an entirely new genre / age of music. Here’s a collection of some of the original songs that have done just this – some are very obvious and some not so. It can sometimes question your opinion on whether the sample use was ‘lazy’ or ‘genius’. You decide, either way this should open your mind to some cool new artists and a back catalogue from all over the world."
