At Super Bowl LIX, the Dunkin’ DunKings returned to defend their crown from rival coffee companies in a ‘Java Jam Battle of the Coffee Brand Bands’. In partnership with Artist Equity, the creative studio founded by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Dunkin’ culminated its Big Game campaign with a star-studded film, following teaser videos, the release of a new DunKings $6 Meal Deal, and a limited edition run of Juicy Couture x Dunkin’ Tracksuits.
The ad – which includes a seven-minute version, titled ‘DunKings 2: The Movie’ – stars the spot’s director, Ben Affleck, as well as his fellow actor brother Casey, Jeremy Strong, Kevin Smith, internet personality Druski, and football coach Bill Belichick.
The funny films plays on the history of Boston, and on Bostonians’ love for Dunkin’. Jeremy Strong is seen method acting as American Revolutionary War folk hero, Paul Revere, bathing in coffee grounds to ‘find the character’, while the DunKings fend off other coffee chains with quick witted put-downs.
“Everyone wants to be a DunKing! After seeing the incredible response to Ben and the DunKings last year, we created an entire coffee and breakfast universe to extend the fun and make one thing clear: Dunkin’ is for everyone,” said Jill McVicar Nelson, chief marketing officer at Dunkin’. “This latest chapter is bigger, funnier, and full of surprises – and it reinforces what Dunkin’ has always been about: great coffee, fast – plain and simple. We have a lot to offer, from all-day breakfast to high-quality drinks served at the speed of Dunkin’. And while we take those things very seriously, we never take ourselves too seriously. DunKings for life."
The seven-minute cut of the film – which you can watch here – is full of intensely quotable lines and plenty of little nods to Boston and Massachusetts’ most famous exports – including Dunkin’ itself, of course. The film was edited in-house at Artist Equity and colour graded by Company 3's Stefan Sonnenfeld, with further post production work from Method studios, Lime Studios and Mophonics.
From the Dunkin’ tracksuits to men trading insults dressed as fast food items, the absurdity only escalates throughout, culminating in a rousing speech from the Oscar nominee Jeremy Strong in full revolutionary garb, who declares: “America Runneth on Dunkin’!”
