LBB’s Tom Loudon caught up with Wunderman Thompson Australia’s new junior copywriter Brendan Morrow to explore the creative alchemy behind great writing

Junior copywriter Brendan Morrow has recently made his mark, achieving distinction at AWARD School.

While he might not have seen it coming, Brendan’s commitment to conceptual thinking and a dedication to compelling narratives are exactly what has seen his star rise all the way to the halls of Wunderman Thompson Australia.

By valuing consistency and cutting through the clutter, Brendan takes his work to new places each day. Sharing his insights with LBB’s Tom Loudon, Brendan talks creative process, expectations, and the distinctive culture that sets Wunderman Thompson apart in the realm of advertising.

LBB> Congratulations on your achievement at AWARD School! How do you plan to leverage your skills and experience as a junior copywriter at Wunderman Thompson?

Brendan> Having the freedom to think of very top-line, conceptual advertising ideas was a great introduction to the industry. Bringing the same consistency to every brief was probably the biggest learning that I try to carry over to real work.

LBB> Do you consider your work to be creative in nature? If so, can you elaborate on that a bit?

Brendan> Yes, I think that the work is creative in nature. I think it needs to be, in a time when people have so much content from companies thrown at them. A creative approach has the power to cut through the clutter.

LBB> How do you approach the creative process when crafting compelling copy?

Brendan> I always try to empty any thoughts I have onto the page. Allowing myself to be free, and then reigning myself in later seems to do the trick. I also try to strip my sentences down, and say what I was saying, in fewer words. This answer could probably be stripped down a bit, come to think of it.

LBB> What do you think sets Wunderman Thompson apart in terms of its creative approach and culture?

Brendan> There is a great culture here. There are a bunch of clever minds all chipping in together to create some incredible work. Having access to briefs and clients from over East keeps the work coming in fresh, too. They didn’t pay me to say this, I promise.

LBB> What are your expectations for personal growth and development in your new role?

Brendan> It’s great to learn and grow in an environment where I feel very supported. I hope to keep pushing hard to try and make good work.
