Delia Simonetti Transports Audiences to Another Dimension in Short Film

Acclaimed Milan-based director Delia Simonetti invites us to step into a mesmerising world with her latest short film, Dell'Altro Mondo (Otherworldly). This experimental film, a collaborative effort with the emerging electronic musician BU'KE and a talented team of artists, pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling.

Dell'Altro Mondo (Otherworldly) begins with a group of friends discovering an enchanted flower in their backyard, triggering what appears to be a collective hallucination. As their reality becomes increasingly distorted, the friends grapple with their altered perceptions, merging their individual identities to find a way out. The film's unique visual approach immerses viewers in a dreamlike experience where nothing is quite as it seems.

Delia describes the film as "a door to another dimension, the dimension of the other," adding, "We want to connect with others, but we're also afraid of losing ourselves. It’s a melting point, a leap into the unknown. To me, it’s about the bravery of friendship. This film is a collective creation, brought to life by a dedicated team of artists, from VFX to costumes and cast. Nothing is what it seems, but we’re all in this together."

Using techniques like pixilation and stop-motion animation, Dell'Altro Mondo (Otherworldly) creates a space between reality and dream. The enchanted flower symbolises nature and desire, drawing inspiration from Norman McLaren's Neighbours. The film concludes with the friends uniting into a single entity, emphasising themes of unity and the transformative power of friendship.

Delia's work spans cinema, fashion, music, and visual arts, with her films featured in renowned festivals such as Raindance, Aesthetica, and Berlin Commercial. Her music video for David Blank & PNKSAND's 'Foreplay' is part of the permanent collection at MUDEC - Museo delle Culture in Milan, Italy. Simonetti also delves into artistic research with projects like 'Not So Close' (2021) and explores alternative photography under her alter-ego Malcelata. Currently, she is developing her first feature film, 'The Girl Who Lived Twice'.
