Bryght Young Things' latest piece, directed by Daniel Navetta, showcases Google’s Sustainability initiatives and environmental responsibility. Partnering with Made By Google and Google Design, teams renowned for their creative and design excellence, Daniel has created a film that seamlessly blends analogue and digital elements into a captivating narrative.
One of the striking aspects of this collaboration is the choice to use analogue formats like 35mm and 8mm film alongside 4k Alexa Footage. “ I wanted this film to speak to the need for nature and science to work in harmony. Pairing all of these mediums encapsulates a visual representation of the layered thinking essential to achieving big environmental goals.” said Daniel. In an age dominated by digital technology and AI, this choice not only demonstrates a commitment to traditional craftsmanship but also serves as a powerful statement about the intersection of the past and the future.
The film also pushes into some truly experimental territory. The title cards that appear throughout the film were created with all analogue FX. Going a step further than layering text onto the film, these type moments employ a prismatic glow while the background landscapes and environmental compositions serve as their foundation. “Creating in-camera analogue FX on 35mm is risky and requires incredible precision while shooting on location in Big Sur, but I wanted to make sure we walked away with something memorable and a result I’d never seen executed on 35mm film previously”.
In an industry that often prioritises technology over artistry, the decision to embrace analogue formats is a bold and refreshing choice. It serves as a reminder that true innovation lies not just in the tools we use, but in the creativity and vision behind them.
