Behind the Stereo with Chromonicci

What is going on? My name is Chromonicci and this is Behind The Stereo. 

Q> Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Chromonicci> My biggest inspiration I think currently is honestly the universe and nature. I’m personally obsessed with colour and I just love to see how that plays out. I think just as we live and move through life.

Q> Who would you like to share the stage with?

Chromonicci> And that’s honestly crazy easy because I’ve been following this man’s career for a minute and he’s inspired me so much, but I have to give it to Kaytranada. His dancey, bouncy vibe. And it’s like these cool edits and these remixes and stuff just made like music fun to interact with as a listener and as a producer, singer-songwriter, all that like, I feel so inspired by the way that he accesses music and also, because he is a black queer man. 

Q> Top 3 of favourite foods

Chromonicci> Top of the list is Thai Red Coconut Curry, a Panang Curry, Tex Mex. I say a good enchilada with rice and beans is easy second, and third I have to give it back to my roots. Southern food, a good southern home cooked meal. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, and sweet tea.

Q> Try to define your musical style in 3 words.

Chromonicci > I’d say definitely colourful. I’d say energetic and reflective. 

Q> How did you first get into music, and what inspired you to become an independent artist?

Chromonicci > I actually have to give all the credit to my mom. She is also a singer, producer, songwriter, and she taught me everything I knew. We spent a lot of time just listening to a lot of different music and she expanded my tastes and just gave me a lot of great music to interact with. 

I flow between genres, I flow between vibes and energies quite often. So having the freedom to express myself is really important and I feel independent artistry is a very unique subset of music where you can really do that.

Q> If you were not a singer, what would you be?

Chromonicci > I would definitely be a professional basketball player of some sort. I love basketball. And I’m pretty good at it. I’m not too chubby. I’m pretty nice. 

Q> What advice would you give to artists in general and specifically, artists from the LGBTQIA+ community? 

Chromonicci > I think that this industry a lot of times tells us that we’re not valuable, tells us that we’re not special. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. 

We are lights, We’re beautiful, we’re fantastic people and we bring so much. We have the experience of the other identities that we carry alongside,  that very specific queer identity that we hold near and dear to us as well. There is just a myriad of possibilities behind creativity with this intersectionality and I say don’t let someone tell you that you’re not valuable. You are literally a gem. You’re special in every single way.

Q> What is your favourite part of being a SoStereo artist?

Chromonicci > My favourite part so far is it’s been really easy to communicate with people. I feel like I’ve had really good communications with my specific account manager. It’s the accessibility to opportunities. I feel like I’ve gotten a good number of offers and they’ve shipped my stuff and I just appreciate the ways in which they make these offers visible. Getting my music out there to different audiences, It’s something that doesn’t feel so far away. So I like that accessibility aspect of it for sure.
