Produced by 9 Story Media Group in association with LS Productions, CBBC’s A Kind of Spark explores history, neurodivergence and self-belief with a magical flair. Based on Elle McNicoll’s award-winning novel, the 10-part series is out now and available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
The story is led by autistic teenager, Addie, as she grapples with and interrogates the history of the British women tried as witches in her hometown. Throughout the ten episode tour de force, the magic and power on screen is brought to life by an exemplary cast of young actors.
The characters in A Kind of Spark are authentically represented. All of the autistic characters are played by autistic actors. This includes the three leading cast members: Lola Blue (Addie), Georgia De Gidlow (Keedie), and Caitlin Hamilton (Nina).
Tatton Estate was chosen by LS Productions’ expert location team as the ideal place for filming. The film-friendly estate allowed for the weaving of the past and present to take place at one controlled location, which was core to the narrative across all episodes. Tatton Estate is near to the LS Productions' Manchester production office and studios, providing fingertip access to an experienced crew.
Behind and in front of the lens, authentic representation is a core commitment of LS Productions. It was essential that the high profile series have a reality behind-the-scenes of a wider crew made up of many members who are neurodivergent themselves. This cohesive effort resulted in the creation of a stellar show with the richest of characters that the entire family can enjoy together.
