alter ego Takes Showreels to the Next Level

Toronto's leading commercial colour and VFX house, alter ego, takes showreels to the next level with its 2020 colour reel featuring explosions, cars - lots of cars, sky replacements, celebrities, and sports, sports and more sports.

The original accompanying music was written specifically for the reel by Jeff Moberg and Julie Neff, who commented: “We couldn't write the song without the edit, yet we couldn’t do the edit without the song. There was a lot of back and forth. It ended up taking us eight months to produce but we’re incredibly proud of thrilled with how it turned out.”

The pair collaborated on writing the track, with Jeff creating the sound design and the smooth vocals coming from Julie. alter ego senior colourist and partner, Eric Whipp, worked on the edit, featuring works by all the artists at alter ego.

Eric commented: “I wanted to create a reel that is watchable from start to finish. Making a little bit of fun of showreels in general. The lyrics of the song are almost like what we would say in our heads when cutting a reel, so why not say it out loud with some humour?”

Jeff Moberg added: “Eric and Julie came up with the concept of an '80s synth-inspired track, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that call out the on-screen edit. From the start, we faced the big challenge of riding the line between being funny without being too cheesy, while also keeping the viewer’s attention with a fun track. So I focused on putting together music that had an '80s flair, but with a modern production edge, and added sound design near the end of the process to give each scene a nice punch of cinematic energy. By working together, Julie and Eric and I made sure that the lyrics, video edit, and music all worked together to hit that balance.”
