Before its dramatic resurfacing at a 2020 auction, the existence of Warhol’s Absolut ‘Blue’ was shrouded in mystery. Originally commissioned by Absolut in the 1980s, the painting was intended as a part of a pioneering collaboration that saw Warhol redefine advertising and art. Its rediscovery has ignited a new campaign by Absolut that honour’s Andy’s legacy, with each bottle acting as a tribute to the artist’s boundary-pushing fusion of commercial and fine art.
Director Santiago Sierra Soler, known for his evocative storytelling, draws inspiration from the eccentric characters who once roamed Warhol’s legendary Silver Factory Studio. His film masterfully reimagines the energy and creativity that fuelled Andy's work. As Andy sweeps broad, confident brush strokes of blue across the canvas, viewers are invited into his vibrant hub of creativity and counterculture.
Santiago's cinematic homage is a time capsule, encapsulating the very essence of what inspired Andy’s most iconic works. The blue, cool tones in the video crafted by Jamie Noble of Studio RM, reflect the world of Andy’s warehouse of glamour. Viewers are immersed in a silver-drenched scene, mirroring the metallic world of Andy’s famed studio. Jamie explains that colour is used throughout the film as a tool to ‘bridge the gap’ between the modern and vintage world, just as Andy’s Absolut collaboration invites a new generation to engage with his legacy.
