Google has quietly removed significant cultural events from its calendar app. This move to no longer acknowledge cultural events followed a wave of actions from the big tech company rolling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
YWCA Metro Vancouver has launched ‘Rebook It,’ a calendar booking website that advocates for adding important cultural events back into Google Calendars to ensure they don’t disappear from people’s minds or calendars. ‘Rebook It’ enables anyone to add more significant cultural events, such as International Women’s Day, Women’s History Month (in the US and Canada), Pride Month, and Black History Month, to their Google calendars annually with a click of a button.
Through ‘Rebook It’, the YWCA aims to increase the visibility and representation of communities supported by their advocacy work, such as LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and women, understanding that all cultural events contribute to uplifting these communities.
Beyond the website, YWCA used out-of-home placements in front of select Google offices in the US on March 31, at the end of Women’s History Month, to get the message across directly to Google that cultural events should be added back to their Calendars permanently. These include:
- A truck with an OOH ad driving around Google Seattle office, highlighting that Women’s History Month has been removed from the Calendar and urging passersby to rebook it.
- A digital OOH in front of the Google New York office with the same messaging.
- The strategy, creative, and PR were led by Rethink with YWCA Metro Vancouver.
