Uncommon Creative Studio announces the launch of ‘Uncommon Studio Residencies’ — a programme that opens the studio up to diverse creative talent from different disciplines to be part of Uncommon in a bid to learn and collaborate on projects together.

The programme looks for creative individuals and businesses with a shared ambition to make things that matter - however, the residents will be from various differing disciplines - for example residents could be from backgrounds in editorial, fashion, food, architecture and so on. The programme will seek out rare and diverse talent who see the world differently, bringing a fresh perspective into the studio’s day to day operations and thinking, such as working on Uncommon’s live briefs as well as each residency aiming to create something together to put out into the world — this collaboration will vary for each and every resident that passes through the programme.

The first residents to be involved in the programme are the founders of Yellowzine — an online and print platform centralising visual art by African, Caribbean, Asian and Hispanic creatives from across the UK. Founded by siblings, Aisha and Oreoluwa Ayoade, Yellowzine was born with a mission to create a space for these creatives to express themselves artistically and boundlessly. The platform was a response to the racial inequalities that exist within the creative industries, something both Aisha and Oreoluwa experienced first hand.

Yellowzine have also just launched their fourth issue of the magazine titled ‘New Traditions’ centered around those diverging away from the traditions before them and building their own. From collage artists, to illustrators, audio-visual artists and photographers — it celebrates artists across many mediums, who are starting a new era. To find out more and order a copy see here.

Since its launch in 2017, Yellowzine has grown from an Instagram handle to a website, newsletter, creative platform, funding body and mentorship programme underpinned by an annual print magazine featuring art created by individuals from the African, Caribbean and Asian diaspora. Whether it’s their website or magazine, Yellowzine has become the home for discovering cutting edge UK-based or born artists.

Currently Yellowzine is split into four divisions: a curated print magazine, an online submissions-based platform, live events and an annual 8-week creative mentorship scheme. Through all of these, the platform aims to connect artists and creatives to clients and collaborators, whilst providing them with the tools and guidance for a career in the industry. Yellowzine has also organised and held panel discussions and creative workshops helping young creatives flourish in challenging environments.

Due to their success to date, Yellowzine are aiming to expand their community further — occupying a higher number of spaces online, more events, new mentorship opportunities, diversifying content, and collaborating with brands and organisations that spotlight community-faced projects.

Aisha Ayoade, Yellowzine Founder said: “In the past four years we’ve been able to achieve some amazing things and build a community that we hadn’t anticipated being on the cards as a magazine. At this time it feels like we’re on the cusp of a new chapter and we’re ready to elevate the platform to the next level.”

Oreoluwa Ayoade, Yellowzine Founder added: “We are huge admirers of Uncommon and their work. We’re very excited to have this opportunity to join their residency programme and can’t wait to see what collaborations it will bring.”

Uncommon has launched Studio Residencies to learn and be inspired by different skill sets and has the intention to directly collaborate on a new project with each resident. Studio Residencies will aim to provide people, companies and ideas with the opportunity to work and collaborate with Uncommon in their Farringdon office for set period of time — each residency will run for a bespoke agreed period of time, for example Yellowzine will be working with Uncommon for one week a month over the next six months.

Tom Griffin, chief operating officer at Uncommon concluded: “The studio residency programme is our way to get close to exciting talent we admire. A chance to learn from each other and to collaborate beyond the boundaries of our industry. The editorial space is something we’ve always been excited by at Uncommon — and we are big admirers of the platform and community that Yellowzine have built. We can’t wait to see what we make together.”
