Barcelona based director Erik Morales has just signed with TWC Films, Los Angeles for exclusive representation in the U.S.
Morales, who started directing at the age of 25, has racked up an impressive list of awards in a short time. He has shortlisted many times in Cannes...and in 2011 he won a Bronze Lion for his NIKE ‘Shine’ spot. Early on he won a Silver FIAP award with his third commercial. Since then he has captured the attention of many clients among which are Nike, Audi, Mercedes, VW, Coca Cola, Diesel, Toyota, Sony, and many others. In addition to Cannes, Erik has accomplished high recognition at the international festivals FIAP, Sol - Sebastian-, CdC, and Laus. Three of his commercials - Nike “Magnificent 5”, VW Beetle “Balloon” and Audi “Projections” - were shown in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.
“Erik is a rock star in Spain” said TWC Managing Director Mark Thomas. “Seriously, when I first became aware of his work and started to inquire about him, that was the one consistent response from whomever I spoke with…and it’s an accurate description of what’s happening with his career”. Thomas continued, “Spain has always produced an amazing amount of interesting directorial talent…Victor Garcia, Pep Bosh, Nacho Gayan…all spectacular in their own way...I believe Erik is next in that line of amazing filmmakers. Directors who tell stories in a rich, compelling and clever manner…that is a perfect description of Erik.”
Born in Spain in 1978, director Erik Morales originally had plans of studying the Arts. But his love for drawing illustrations and comics, combined with his discovery of underground films, sparked his interest in cinema. The prominent new films and film directors during Erik’s high school years inspired him to become a director himself. Upon graduating he choose Media Studies over Arts and enrolled at the university ‘Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación Blanquerna.’ While attending, he did many short films and won prizes in festivals around Spain.
“Being on the set, shooting is where I feel best. I love the process of creating sequences and images that will later build the movie in the editing room,” said Morales when asked about his passion for directing. “In general I like any good story or idea regardless the of genre. But the kinds of commercials I feel most comfortable with are the ones which have a strong visual and emotional component, but as I said before, I like filming all kinds of stuff and I try to innovate each time. Every project is different and the needs are different as well, that’s one of the best things of the job.”
About working with TWC Erik said, “The US market is the most important market in the world and where the best campaigns are made. I’m really glad TWC has given me the chance to work there.”
