Daft Punk’s Get Lucky sold 1.4 million copies in the UK with an estimated revenue of £1,100,000 – but calculations based on an average record industry model indicate that the band could have earned as little as £73,000 in royalties.
A new website WhatTheArtistGot.com, created by Holler, has launched to put spending power back into the hands of the fans by calculating the split of revenue for top selling digital tracks.
WhatTheArtistGot.com, created for the music platform Songeist, gives people the chance to see exactly where and to whom their money goes to when they purchase a digital download.
Fans can search through some of the most popular downloaded tracks of all time and discover the cost for artists of doing business through a traditional major record label versus what they could have earned if they sold the track DIY through a platform such as Songeist.
