Sam Brown brings broadband to life by staging high-speed connections and unlimited entertainment as a raucous car chase through Virgin’s cables. Pure joy for film lovers, the spot is crammed full of film references and genre mash-ups. Everyone from cowboys and superheroes to Queen Elizabeth I and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hurtle through the wire in a race reminiscent of Mad Max and set to the breathless pace of the Pulp Fiction theme, Dick Dale & His Del-Tones’s Misirlou. The end goal? Bringing the entertainment you love to your screens as fast as possible.
Whereas many would have built the environment in CGI, director Sam Brown gave the crew the challenge of building the largest practical shooting tunnel in commercial history. Nearly 200 feet long, with an original futuristic design, nine metres wide and five metres high and fully lit with 1200 built-in light sources along its full length, it was reinforced to withstand the weight of not only hundreds of cast, but also a stagecoach with four horses and period action vehicles, including Mad Max cars and bikes, a 1920’s gangster car, a 1970s-style police car and getaway car plus, horse and rider. All these, as well as our camera vehicles, which included a two-tonne Russian arm and other tracking vehicles.
The advert debuted on Friday 24 March during Coronation Street on ITV1 and Gogglebox on Channel 4, to be followed by print and online activity.
