Many years have passed since I first stumbled out of a warehouse club, fresh-faced in what would later become Coal Drops Yard. Catching five minutes’ kip in King’s Cross Station waiting for the tube to open, before returning home to a New Year’s Day lunch with the extended family…they knew…they had to.
Now five-minute kips are handed out sparingly at the behest of my one-year-old, late nights have taken on an entirely different flavour, and the club in question is probably a classy but unaffordable small plates eatery.
As I’ve grown older, my love for electronic music hasn’t wavered; it has changed, however. Softening as time has passed. Fortunately, the medium has changed with me, as it has become more commonplace to create electronic music that doesn’t just exist for clubs but as music to be enjoyed in films, theatre, and festival halls. A change that I welcomed on both counts.
So to those who are getting the first train home, sleep well, and for the rest of us who have been up for hours already, a cup of tea and some tunes.
