The new studio will significantly boost the production potential for Platige and its external partners

Platige Image has launched its new highly advanced motion capture studio. The newly opened space will be used for recording projects such as cinematics, cutscenes, in-game animation, animated movies and more.

The studio’s opening is the next step in the Platige Image’s development. The studio will significantly boost the production potential in terms of projects prepared for external partners.

The primary distinguishing feature of the motion capture studio (Mocap) is its size. The studio’s considerable dimensions of 20m x 13m and 8m enable realization of scenes with up to a dozen characters at once (body performance) or four actors in the case of full performance capture: body capture, face capture and fingers capture.

The studio is equipped with four fully wireless video references with autofocus, stabilization and a focal range of 25 to 380mm, which at the same time serve as virtual cameras with full focal shift synchronization between the reference camera and the virtual camera. Platige benefits from its own solution for building set design components, which offers almost unlimited possibilities for arranging the interior for the project. With the studio configured like this, the only possible limitation is scenes that require filming in an open space.

"In the new studio, we will realize both recordings for our internal projects, made exclusively in Platige, such as cinematics, scenes cut, in-game animations, as well as fully mocap projects, i.e. when only the movements of characters and actors are recorded, which will be delivered to clients in the form of raw or scrubbed session data," says Elżbieta Trosińska, mocap producer at Platige Image.

Thanks to these modern tools, the studio is able to implement several projects at the same time.

"Not only are we up to date with the development of motion capture technology in the world, but we are also developing our own solutions in this area. Among other things, we have created a proprietary HMC (Head-Mounted Camera) system for recording faces. It is an ultra-lightweight system, allowing us to obtain a recording that captures all the details," adds Elżbieta Trosińska.

Motion capture is a computer technology for capturing the movement of an actor or moving prop, or even cameras, marked with special markers. Markers are dots in the form of balls, covered with a special reflective material. They are attached with a  touch fastener or tape to the recorded moving object. The cameras have a number of diodes, emitting infrared light, which is reflected from the markers. Such technology allows the markers positions to be calculated in three-dimensional space and translated into digital recording. Motion capture is characterized by greater naturalism and realism, but the key role in this process is played by trained actors and technicians responsible for the implementation of the entire filming process.

"The launch of the motion capture studio is part of our strategy for 2021-2025, including production of our own video games, films and series," says Karol Żbikowski, CEO of Platige Image. "Thanks to even stronger technological base we will efficiently implement external projects from our pipeline and significantly improve our creative processes in productions which are underway which Platige studio is currently working on."
