With October being Black History Month, there were many calls for increasing diversity within the advertising industry, and rightly so. These calls shouldn't be confined to one month though and we should continue to talk openly about those sticky issues. The issues that make everyone that bit more uncomfortable. But for every person who feels uncomfortable talking about topics such as race, gender, class or disability, spare a thought for those who consistently feel like outsiders. Left out and stifled in an industry that's meant to empower and encourage creativity and storytelling.
The power of advertising is immeasurable and this is why music and sound agency, Pitch & Sync has teamed up with Havas to present 'Make Noise', an evening of conversation on music, brands and black culture.
"We regularly see briefs that call for an 'urban' artist but don't go any deeper into the brand's requirements," the team at Pitch & Sync says. "Both Jorja Smith and Skepta for example, are referred to as 'urban' artists, yet their music is light years apart. Black artists in the UK don't receive the same nuance in briefs as others and we're keen to change that."
If you're keen to make noise with Pitch & Sync and Havas, join them and a panel of industry specialists on 20th November and RSVP here.
