The 15th UK Music Video Awards, held at the new south east London venue, Magazine, was attended by a sold out crowd of music video professionals from across the UK - and LBB's very own reporters Nisna Mahtani and Ben Conway. Looking out onto a spectacular view of Canary Wharf from the North Greenwich event space, LBB's reporters and an audience of celebrating creatives, production people and music artists saw Pharrell’s ‘Cash In Cash Out’ music video win four awards - including the most prestigious prize of all: Video Of The Year. Also a multi-winner, was Little Simz, for her ‘Point & Kill’ video that took home awards in three different categories. Other artists that were honoured at the UKMVAs 2022 include Harry Styles, Rosalía, Michael Kiwanuka, Doechii, Sam Fender, and black mid, with awards being bestowed upon the videos’ creators and makers, in the biggest celebration of the year for creativity in the field of music videos.
Other big winners on the night included Ukrainian director Tanu Muino – who won the prize for Best Director for the second year running and gave an impassioned and emotional acceptance speech, revealing the hardships that her Ukrainian production crew overcame during the filming of Harry Styles' 'As It Was' video, which took place as the Russian invasion began. Ebeneza Blanche, who directed the Little Simz ‘Point & Kill’ video, won the Best New Director award and Jules de Chateleux and Division Paris, the producer and the production company (respectively) behind the Pharrell - ‘Cash In Cash Out video’ won Best Producer and Best Production Company awards.
British hip-hop artist Loyle Carner was in attendance to accept the award for Best Performance in a Video for his ‘Hate’ music video – which he co-directed with Spindle's Greg Hackett. Veteran music video commissioner John Moule also won the Best Commissioner prize, Alexa Haywood won Best Agent, and Christopher Ripley was the winner of the inaugural Best Director of Photography.
The Outstanding Achievement Award, bestowed on an individual who has made a huge contribution to the industry over many years, was presented to Dan Curwin, director of music videos at Atlantic Records in the UK, and commissioner of some of the UK’s most successful videos, including Ed Sheeran, Clean Bandit, Rita Ora, Stormzy and Rudimental.
But the biggest honours of all were scooped by the makers of the remarkable animated video for Pharrell’s ‘Cash In Cash Out’, featuring 21 Savage and Tyler the Creator. Based around a CGI zoetrope machine, and more than a year in the making, the video directed by French director Francois Rousselet, with VFX and animation completed at London-based studio Electric Theatre Collective, won Best Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Video International, awards for Best Animation and Best VFX awards, before taking the Video of the Year prize.
