Old El Paso, the UK’s most loved Mexican food brand, surveyed the nation, to uncover the most iconic Team GB Olympic medal moments. With so many moments to choose from, there were a few stand-out favourites, including:
1) Daley Thompson’s decathlon gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles (37%)
2) Tom Daley winning diving gold in 2020 (33%)
3) Sir Steve Redgrave’s 5th gold in 2000 (32%)
4) Sir Chris Hoy’s record-breaking gold at London 2012 (31%)
5) ‘Super Saturday’ collective wins from Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford in London 2012 (30%)
Rebecca Adlington OBE’s double gold in Beijing 2008 is the highest-ranking female performance in 6th place (29%).
To mark the historic Team GB milestone of hitting 1,000 Olympic medals, Old El Paso is celebrating in the only way they know how – with family, friends, and fajitas! Utilising food-safe printing technology, medal moments from Rebecca Adlington, Daley Thompson CBE, Sir Steve Redgrave CBE DL and Sir Chris Hoy MBE have been drawn onto an exclusive number of tortillas.
The tortillas come in 1,000 limited-edition gold, silver and bronze packs and on Monday 12th August, in the afternoon, fans can get their hands on a commemorative limited-edition fajita pack during a brand-to-hand activation around Soho, London.
A nationwide survey conducted by Sportsbeat and commissioned by Old El Paso revealed that 56% of fans prefer to experience the Games alongside family and friends. Additionally, 40% of respondents favour lively celebrations, making it the ideal complement to a shared Old El Paso meal. And, that sentiment stretched beyond just the viewing experience, as 54% of those surveyed agreed that the most special thing about Team GB is its power to bring people together – much like an Old El Paso meal.
The survey aimed to champion how Olympics fans, in particular, those supporting Team GB, come together to support their favourite athletes at The Games. The survey, carried out by Research Without Barriers (RWB), asked 2,000+ Olympics fans in the UK about their viewing habits when supporting The Games.
The British team of Ethan Hayter. Ollie Wood, Dan Bigham and Ethan Vernon secured silver in a thrilling men’s team pursuit to secure Team GB’s 1,000th medal across Olympic and Winter Olympic Games.
And how the Nation celebrated that 1,000th medal? Of the 2,000+ respondents surveyed, 37% said they would “Make Some Noise” to cheer on Team GB’s medal wins.
Commenting on her inclusion in the Old El Paso celebration, Team GB legend, Rebecca Adlington noted, “It’s such an honour to have my Olympic success to be considered in the Nation’s favourite Team GB medal moments! There are hundreds of athletes who have contributed to this moment, and I’m sure all athletes feel as proud as I do. Although I never thought I would have my face on a tortilla! We’ll have to eat these during a special Team GB-themed celebration post-Games!”
As part of Old El Paso’s first-ever Olympic Games campaign, the Mexican-inspired food brand have created a squad of Team GB ‘Home Team Heroes’, Tom Dean MBE, Emily Campbell, Jack Laugher MBE, Beth Shriever MBE and Kye Whyte.
So far, the Home Team Heroes have contributed at the Paris 2024 Olympics with three medals between them – with Emily Campbell and Jack Laugher hopeful to add to the tally in the remaining days.
Head of Marketing at Old El Paso, Aditi Hilgers, said, “We are thrilled to partner with such an iconic team and be part of this historic moment. Our limited-edition tortillas are a delicious way to commemorate Team GB's incredible achievements over the years and inspire fans to come together and celebrate."
The activation is part of the Old El Paso ‘Make Some Noise for Your Home Team’ Team GB campaign, which champions how the magic of The Games creates connection amongst fans’ Home Teams during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – bringing family and friends together around a table of Old El Paso.
As Team GB continue to make history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Old El Paso invites fans to join the celebrations and cheer on their favourite athletes and Make Some Noise for your Home Team!
