Nando's Steps Up To Santam's 'Back At Ya' Challenge

And delivers dinner to The Johannesburg Children’s Home 24 hours before deadline

As Nando’s customers know, South Africa’s leading fast-casual restaurant chain might be all about the most delicious flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken – but it’s never shown itself to be chicken and run away from a challenge.

So, in response to a public dare to deliver a substantially sized takeaway order to the Johannesburg Children’s Home by Thursday, April 26th at 4pm, Nando’s has fired up its grills and got its staff packing a mouthwatering meal that will in fact be delivered today (April 25th) between 4 and 5pm – well before the cut-off declared by the challenger in this affair.

Speaking on behalf of Nando’s, Quinton Cronje, Nando’s South Africa Marketing Director said the brand was actually “more than happy to oblige” when publicly asked to do something good. “We’re also very flattered that a prominent financial institution liked our advert so much it took the time to spoof it,” Cronje said. Like some Sir said, it’s all about taking care of the detail and Nando’s is happy to oblige.

The light hearted battle of the brands began after Nando’s spoofed the well-known Santam television ad which features Sir Ben Kingsley. This latest ad by Santam was aired today from 16h00 to 22h30 on various television stations.

The online video had already caught the positive attention of bloggers and social media experts, many of whom were eager to see if Nando's would rise to the challenge.

At the time, ays Donald Kau, head of corporate affairs at Santam said “we are leading the conversation for consumers to ensure they are aware of the finer details of the agreement they enter into when buying insurance. The ad has been well received and this was underlined when the ad was imitated by Nando’s.”

“As leaders in the community, we are daring Nando’s to step up to the plate, because as our ad states, this is a small price to pay, all things considered.”

The Johannesburg Children’s Home is the city’s oldest charity, established in 1892, the home to provide a loving environment for 64 abused, neglected and abandoned children of all races.
