What exactly happened in May?
In this month’s edition I write about the most anticipated albums, including the upcoming Lady Gaga, unexpected collaborations that actually make total sense and some of my favourite releases of May.
As a music supervisor I love so many parts of this dream job of mine, but there's something extra special about being able to listen to songs before the official release. It feels so secretive, so private and at the same time the coolest thing ever and when I had the opportunity to listen to the new single by Fred again… and saw that Anderson .Paak was on it I smiled so big and played it on repeat. The song was also co-produced by Skrillex and Boo and features vocals of CHIKA.
After collaborating with Lil Yachty seems like Fred again… wants to continue exploring songs with versitile hip-hop musicians and Anderson .Paak’s raspy vocals and drumming works so well in ‘’places to be’’, a drum and bass influenced track that has a lot of potential to be a Summer banger.
It is just one of those collaborations that come as a surprise but that makes TOTAL sense: two incredibly talented musicians and producers with interesting creative visions for their work that are absolute masters at their craft, especially when we think of Andy’s versatility and ability to fusion genres. One can totally understand that Fred again… as a musician and producer might have a huge admiration for his fellow producer and multiinstrumentalist’s work and vice versa.
Speaking of Anderson .Paak, it is about time for a new NxWorries album and I must say it is one of the releases that I look forward to the most this year. It was announced that it will come out on June 14, after 8 years of their debut album.
All we know so far is that the album is called Why Lawd? and will have 19 songs, including the 4 already released singles: Where I Go? with H.E.R, fromhere with Snoop Dog, 86Sentra and Daydreaming.
Still talking about albums that we cannot wait to hear, Lady Gaga recently once again, reassured her fans that new music is coming soon. Her next album does not have a publicly known release date yet, but in numerous interviews, Lady Gaga mentioned that she has been writing and producing a lot and exploring new music genres and that we all can expect new music soon.
Exploring new sounds is also something Vince Staples did in his new album Dark Times.
The record goes in a new direction, showing a much softer side of the rapper that is one of my favourites in the scene, with more introspective and mature lyrics that go in depth understanding his life and instrumentation wise we see a much more bittersweet sound and production, while still being cohesive and having hook-filled songs with interesting beats choices.
Another one of my favourite releases of the month is the single Ghosting You by Mulay, a Berlin-based R&B/soul singer that is one of the most talented songwriters on the rise in the country. The most recent EP IVORY and the single Ghosting You are incredibly beautiful with raw, honest lyrics that come from a deep personal place of pain, resilience, healing, and growth and I look forward to seeing her continue to grow and to her upcoming debut album.
