Blind Pig have partnered up with Artist, Ignasi Monreal and Motel to create seven fifteen-second animations for payments fintech, Klarna. The animations form part of Klarna’s global ‘Discover The Truth’ campaign, which features across digital, social and OOH platforms.
Ignasi’s recognisable style has seen him gain a well-deserved following, creating bespoke art for the likes of Adobe, Netflix and Gucci. Blind Pig collaborated with Ignasi and director/creative director, Neda Shadanlou, to brainstorm ways in which movement could add value to the artwork in a visually engaging way. “We brought the world of sinister mermaids and tyrants to life in paintings in order to parody the misinformation about Klarna”, says Neda. “The technical feats of Blind Pig, who breathed motion into the artwork whilst maintaining the integrity of a real painting was incredible.”
Blind Pig animator, Niall High, comments: “For each film, we took inspiration from things like pop-up books or stage plays, with parts of the background shifting and moving like backdrops on a theatre stage. We also took elements from Terry Gilliam’s work, albeit through a far more technically enhanced aesthetic. We experimented with a variety of techniques, from frame-by-frame, to digital puppetry and 3D camera movements. It was a real team effort and each of our animators brought their own technical skillsets to the table.”
Subtlety of movement was imperative to authentically translating the energy of Ignasi’s paintings, which also feature as murals in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, into an animated series. To achieve this, Blind Pig used a variety of workflows within a 2.5D space, including After Effects, TVPaint and Cinema 4D. “This was an exciting project, because it was a collaboration between creative teams”, explains Blind Pig creative director, Ric Comline. “Typically, it is far more common for us to be creating animations based on our own designs and illustrations - so it was really interesting for us to be working with the super talented Ignasi, whose artwork we were bringing to life!”
