Skittles announced earlier this month that it was to stage a one-off 30-minute Broadway show on the afternoon of Sunday 3rd February, instead of airing an actual ad during the game (in similar fashion to its efforts last year). And, judging from this 90-second teaser directed by SMUGGLER's Randy Krallman, Hall, whose stage credits include Cabaret and Lazarus, will perform in it.
“To celebrate the biggest marketing day of the year, Skittles wanted to go bigger than the traditional 30-second big game ad,” Skittles said in a statement. “Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical is a one-show-only, live 30-minute spectacle, performed in the heart of Times Square in a 1,500 seat Broadway theater. Through song and dance, the show takes an absurdly self-reflective look at consumerism and the ever-increasing pervasiveness of brand advertising in our lives.”
The teaser opens on Dexter star Hall sitting across from his therapist attempting to explain what he'll be doing on the afternoon of the Super Bowl, much to the psychiatrist's confusion. "You have to buy a ticket to see an ad?" she asks.
After more attempts from Hall to explain his situation, a scarecrow appears as a physical - and suitably weird - manifestation of his anxiety around the musical.
'Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical' is also being produced by SMUGGLER. The production company has produced four shows including the Broadway musical Once, winner of eight Tony awards including Best Musical. It is written by Will Eno, a playwright who recently worked with Hall on the Off Broadway production of Thom Pain. It will take place at The Town Hall Theater in New York's Times Square on 3rd February at 1pm. A small number of tickets are still available via Ticketmaster.
