Exclusive: Director Nik Kacevski will helm a live-action short film based on the acclaimed Australian comic book, LBB’s Tom Loudon reports
Beloved Australian comic Greener Pastures is coming to life on screen, with director Nik Kacevski at the helm of a live-action proof-of-concept short film.

Nik has joined forces with MIK studios’ Ty Linegar and Lauren Cooper to adapt the series, originally created by Michael Michalandos and Tim McEwen in 1990.

The adaptation is set to bring a darker edge to the story of Trevor Bovis, a Minotaur haunted by his past, and will feature Maia Mitchell (The Artful Dodger), Geoff Morrell (Rake), Matt Backar (Watch Dogs), and Alistair Bates (Red Christmas).

For creators Tim McEwen and Michael Michalandos, this Greener Pastures adaptation is decades in the making.

“There’s something surreal about drawing a character for over 30 years and then having the prospect of standing in the same actual room with him,” said Tim McEwen.

Michael Michalandos added, “I’m exhilarated that after 30 years, I will finally meet in person a character we created in ink on a page.”

The film will follow Trevor Bovis, having traded his mythic strength for a soulless corporate life, as he enforces farm foreclosures for a finance company. But when a desperate call for help leads him back to a haunted farm, Trevor must confront his buried guilt and reclaim the strength he tried to forget.

MIK producer Ty Linegar said the team is dedicated to “reimagining Greener Pastures for a new generation while preserving its humour, environmental themes, and rich character development.”

Production is currently underway, and expected to wrap within the month. A viewing platform is yet to be confirmed.

Cinematographer Benjamin Powell will be the film’s director of photography, while production designer Nicola Stillone will helm the distinct visual tone of the film.

Benjamin’s “keen eye for striking composition and immersive cinematography will enhance the film’s bold aesthetic,” Ty said.

Ty added that the film's visual world will “seamlessly blend the grounded and the mythic, the corporate and the rural, the real and the surreal.”

The film will feature practical prosthetics by MEG, whose artistry will ground Trevor’s transformation in a tangible, emotional reality.

As a proof-of-concept, the short is the first step toward a full live-action series and aims to reintroduce the comic to a new generation while captivating loyal fans.

“It’s an exciting time for Australian storytelling,” Ty said. “We’re thrilled to work with Nik Kacevski and bring this epic tale to life with the ambition and scale it deserves.”
