‘A Cowboy Song’ tells the story of Pa 'The Hips' Campion, a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator and Portlaoise kit man clinging to moments of small-town glory. Kojaque blends grit, humour and melancholy, to create a video that is a tender portrait of fading fame, obsession, and longing.
“It was a chance encounter, stars aligning kind of thing. We met Pa Campion outside the bookies in Portlaoise when we were preparing to shoot ‘The Whistle’ music video. The plan for the video was pretty simple, we wanted to capture the spirit of Portlaoise and let Kean’s performance do the talking. However, Pa was fairly insistent that we needed some glitz and glamour to really sell the video, so after some negotiation, we agreed that he could do a performance on Martley’s bus as he needed a lift to town anyway. There was something magnetising about Pa, I found him utterly fascinating. There’s a really interesting phenomenon of small town Irish Elvis’s, it seemed to match the Irish connection to Americana that is peppered throughout Kean’s album. So for the ‘A Cowboy Song’, we felt we needed to know more about Pa Campion, who is the man behind the Rhinestones?” said Kojaque.
