Kirsten Dunst Clashes With the Selfie Generation in 'Aspirational' Short

Iconoclast and director Matthew Frost launch the just-premiered short film Aspirational starring Kirsten Dunst for Vs Mag. In this two-minute film, Kirsten Dunst continues with Frost’s themes of celebrity and isolation in the modern age with great tragicomic timing. She plays herself during an awkward encounter with two female fans, where the sometimes soulless nature of social media is made painfully apparent. As it happens, the pair of dead-eyed millenials accosting Dunst turn out to be less interested in interacting with the person they’re meeting than raising their own social media profile.

Matthew Frost says, “Aspirational was shot in Los Angeles this summer and was another opportunity to work with amazing talent, having made 'Fashion Film' with Lizzy Caplan, as well as the three-film Vogue series starring Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett and Jessica Chastain.”  With dreamlike visuals and a wry, observational sense of humor, Frost explores the of-the-moment pervasiveness of social media with Aspirational. Kirsten Dunst executes spot-on comedic timing as the only character possessing a bygone sense of awareness as she’s forced to take part in the fan’s dissociated exchange.

Aspirational is a subtly biting, perfectly-crafted funhouse mirror reflecting this generation’s drive to provide content for one's own life. As Frost says, “People will do anything to feel more popular.”
