From NFTs to the metaverse, creative producer at The Berry, Andy Daly, showcases some of the world's best work in visual effects

This year has been another brilliant showcase of original and memorable films. From The Berry winning at The Shiny Awards earlier this year, to then being shortlisted for two short films at Cannes Lions (YDA’s and Saatchi & Saatchi), I have been able to see some of the world's best work - and see them being acknowledged by peers and industry leaders. This allows me to hear the reasons why the work stood out so much which is an amazing insight...

Virgin Red - 'Whatever Blows Your Bubble'

Agency: Truant London
Production: Blink Films / Blink Ink
Sound: Jolt

Having previously worked with Truant London, we know how much effort goes into their productions and attention to detail, which you can clearly see through the intelligent usage of green screen, wires and visual effects.

NFT Album Artwork - Mt.Westmore (Ice Cube x Snoop Doog x E40 x Too Short)

Agency & Sound: Gala Music
Production & Post: The Berry

Although slightly biased - very biased - this fantastic global project that we worked on with the artists at Mt.Westmore was a super stand-out moment for me and the entire team at The Berry. We worked hand in hand with the hip-hop superstars to create 16 unique 3D films as NFTs to launch their latest album. All the NFTs were launched through the metaverse on Gala Music.

Heineken - 'A Lockdown Love Story'

Agency: Publicis Italy
Production: Division
Post: Prodigious
Sound: Sizzer

Our interest in the metaverse meant we loved this ad. Connecting real people through virtual reality and technology is something The Berry always pushes to achieve. The mixed media approach (including everyone’s favourite lockdown tech: video calls) lets us get to know our main characters without ever hearing them actually speak. The twisted ending is just the icing on the cake.

Oculus Meta - 'Meta Quest 2: Old Friends, New Fun'

Agency: Anomaly
Director: Frederik Bond

More metaverse! The entire crew at The Berry own Oculus Quest headsets and we all sometimes meet up in the metaverse for a round of golf or game of table tennis. Some people thought this ad missed the mark, but we love it. Since developing our own virtual reality experiences, we really do see the potential of what the metaverse is capable of. We have created VR NFT galleries - and even have a short film coming out starring The Berry Boys in the metaverse...stay tuned!

NHS - 'Could You?'

Agency: 2050 London
Production: My Accomplice
Director: Imogen Harrison
Post: Nomad
Sound: Unit

I was on the jury panel at this summer's Shiny Awards, and there were a lot of brilliant films, music videos and ads. The last one to be played featured no motion whatsoever. Instead, it is a collection of black and white stills edited together with a voiceover. The charity ad shares the reality of what the day-to-day for a neonatal nurse looks like. A lot of it is hard to watch, but it’s raw and real, which makes this simple piece of work so powerful.
