Creative Outpost talks post production and creativity with Alex

Colourist Alexandre Nerzic joins the team at Creative Outpost, currently with two Grading award nominations under his belt. Namely The Young British Arrows Colourist and The Shark Awards Best New Colourist categories.

MD Danny Etherington comments, “Alex has an in-depth knowledge in the technologies and science behind digital colour. Combine that with his pin sharp creative eye, you have someone who is already setting the grade world alight. Alex is an incredible talent and his passion for grading is second to none. He has a calm and confident demeanour that instils complete confidence that any project is in the best of hands.

Here at Creative Outpost we can give Alex exposure not only to production companies and agencies, but also with the major studios too as our episodic arm grows at pace”.

Alex adds, “I’m excited to join Creative Outpost as I know I will be able to work on high profile commercials and some great long form projects too. It is a perfect balance!”

You can view Alex’s reel here, showcasing his back catalogue of work.

Q> Alex, you moved here from France, how long have you been in the UK? Where is ‘home’ now?

Alex> Well It has been 7 years now… I love going back to France sometimes to reconnect, but after a few days I need to come back to my new home, London.

Q> How did you get into the industry and did you study colour science or are you self taught?

Alex> I started like most people in this industry, by working as a runner! I think it is still an important step to do. From there I was just eager to learn. I didn't have a background in colour science but I was just really curious. I am this kind of weirdo who enjoys reading software manuals during his spare time. Hahaha…

Q> Was there a film or TV show that inspired your journey into post production?

Alex> I was captivated by some movies like Amelie Poulain, but it was mainly music videos that made me curious about grading.

Q>  What really drives you creatively and what aspects of your work do you obsess over?

Alex> I am driven by emotions. I am addicted to this feeling of satisfaction when everything comes into one piece.

Q>  What is your favourite kind of brief?

Alex> For me a good brief is: some picture / video references and a description of the mood of the scene. Simple and gives enough room for experimenting.

Q> How do you approach grading a project?

Alex> First I have a look at the grade brief and pick up some stills from the references. After that, I go with my gut, I experiment with the rushes. Then, I compare and adjust to the references.

Q> If you weren’t in post-production, what career do you think you’d be doing instead?

Alex> Blacksmith.

Q> When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind?

Alex> I am a bit boring… I love reading a book in a park during spring hahaha

Q> Re the Creative Outpost Logo colour, are you Teal or Orange?

Alex> Definitely Teal. Cold is Gold.
