The FireFlies tackle the toughest peaks in Europe every year to raise money for leukaemia charity Bloodwise, cycling from London to the South of France during the Cannes Lions festival. And as those who have joined the FireFlies can attest, the journey is no freewheeling saunter – it’s a tough physical, emotional and psychological challenge that sees a gang of amateur cyclists take on the vertiginous roads through the Alps.
Nick Mason has directed a gruelling short film documenting the sheer grit and effort that it takes to master the treacherous Alpine route. Unconditional Love also offers viewers a glimpse into the work that Bloodwise does with the money raised by the FireFlies and their supporters.
The annual trek was established in 2001 and is particularly well supported by London’s advertising and production communities – and its patron is Sir Ridley Scott.
On July 29th, The Institute of Light in London’s Hackney will be hosting a premiere and after party. There will be four screenings – 18:30 / 19:00 / 19:30 / 20:00 – plus a chance to catch live action from the final day of the Tour De France, as cycling’s superhero elite thunder home from Houillers to Champs-Élysées.
Later on the night will be drawn to a close by Elephant Disco joined by film score composer Peter Cattermoul, and Teleman DJs until 11pm.
