New Beloved by critics and festival goers out of this year’s Sundance, India Donaldson’s feature directorial debut 'Good One' is now set to release theatrically across the US on August 9th, 2024. 'Good One' was the only film playing in both Sundance and Cannes this year, with the feature debuting in the Directors’ Fortnight parallel section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Executive Produced by Tinygiant – a veteran commercial production company with their first big splash into long form – 'Good One' is the coming-of-age story about the ramifications of a father-daughter camping trip. It’s notably the first new release from Metrograph Pictures. The film was produced by Diana Irvine, Graham Mason, India Donaldson and Wilson Cameron, with Sarah Winshall of Smudge Films and Neil Champagne, Veronica Diaferia and Sara Eolin of Tinygiant executive producing.
'Good One,' 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias) embarks on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills with her dad, Chris (James Le Gros) and his oldest friend, Matt (Danny McCarthy). As the two men quickly settle into a gently quarrelsome brotherly dynamic, airing long-held grievances, Sam, wise beyond her years, attempts to mediate. But when lines are crossed and Sam’s trust is betrayed, tensions reach a fever pitch, as Sam struggles with her dad’s emotional limitations and experiences the universal moment when the parental bond is tested.
Tinygiant founder and executive producer, Veronica Diaferia notes, “We’re so proud of the recognition ‘Good One’ has received and it’s exhilarating to see how much it resonates with audiences. I’ve been to the Cannes Lions Festival more times than I can count– it was a thrill to be there a month earlier on the red carpet.”
Since 2015, Tinygiant has been one of the industry’s few woman-owned and led production companies helmed by Veronica Diaferia from the start and picking up partner/EP Sara Eolin in 2022. Tinygiant has forged a path in the commercial ad and brand space, building a reputation for being a trusted partner with impeccable taste, touting a roster of veteran directors as well as a launching pad for diverse emerging talent. In parallel paths, the feature division has been picking up steam, led by head of development, Neil Champagne.
“The world of advertising is in a constant state of evolution. As a production company you need to be the same. We owe it to our directors to offer them support in longform, as well as our clients. But most importantly, we owe it to the young Sara, Neil and Veronica who went to film school with the desire to make movies from 30 seconds to 120 minutes. The lines between commercials and entertainment continue to blur and we’re energised to see both sides thriving,” says Sara.
'Good One' falls squarely in the middle of Tinygiant's principal ideals. It is a first-time female filmmaker's film, with a breakout performance from the lead actress, and it was shot in Upstate New York. Tinygiant is always looking to champion emerging voices and foster their rise, and love to be doing it in their beloved New York. “We couldn’t be more proud and grateful to be a part of such a powerful story and stunning vision from India and team,” says Neil.
