Some creative partnerships are forged in agencies, while others come together over chance encounters. For Fa & Fon, it was all more unusual: “We were womb mates,” says Fon.
The Thai-born, London-based directing duo repped by Pulse Films has been collaborating since their university days, crafting a bold, genre-defying aesthetic that blends fashion, narrative, music and surreal visuals with cultural pride and emotional resonance. But their roots run far deeper than their joint creative CV.
“We’ve been working together since uni, but really we’ve known each other since forever,” Fon explains.
Like many twins, Fa and Fon spent much of their early lives trying to establish their own identities, separately from each other. But once at university, the strength of their creative connection quickly became apparent. “We realised we could really utilise the network we were making together,” says Fa. “Two heads and hearts are better than one.”
Their first project was a homegrown, DIY fashion editorial inspired by mukbang videos and shot with a photographer friend. It wasn’t perfect, but it marked the beginning of something significant. Soon after came their first client commission for Converse, along with the realisation that their shared creative vision truly had commercial legs. “We didn’t even know what invoicing was back then,” jokes Fon.
Since then, the pair have honed a collaborative process built on trust, emotional intuition, and a touch of twin telepathy. “Fon is definitely the wilder one,” says Fa. “She comes up with amazing, outrageous ideas, and I help shape them into something we can actually make. We balance each other out.”
Fon agrees. “Fa calms me down and helps ground my ideas. But we elevate each other’s thinking. We’re each other’s hype people – but we also know when to call bullshit.”
The honesty that comes from being siblings gives them an edge when it comes to decision-making and creative tension. “We’ve never really fought when it comes to work,” says Fa. “We’re both meticulous from the beginning and get aligned early. That saves us a lot of back and forth.”
Emotion, too, plays a key role in their process. “We’re emotionally invested in every project,” says Fa. “It’s not about keeping feelings out of it. Passion drives everything, and our instincts often lead us to the right answer.”
When they disagree, they handle it with a kind of structured playfulness. “We let each other fight for the idea,” says Fon. “Make your case, weigh it up – it becomes part of the creative process.”
Their approach is refreshingly grounded. Take a recent shoot, originally scheduled over two days but suddenly condensed into one. “We had to split into two units,” recalls Fon. “That’s always a challenge. You don’t want to lose anything, but you’ve got to make it work.”
Fa adds: “We genuinely believe anything is possible. There’s this semi-delusional optimism that turns every obstacle into a puzzle to solve. We thrive on it.”
When asked about collaborations they’re proudest of, each of them names something different – Fon picks ‘Happy Ending’, a personal project born out of pure creative freedom, and Fa highlights ‘Trapezi’, a music video with Marina Satti that combined artistic alignment with deep mutual respect. “It was made with so much love. I’m incredibly proud of it."
The duo’s creative inspirations range widely – fro visionaries like Nadia Lee Cohen and Gabriel Moses, to anime legends like Hayao Miyazaki and the Hajime Yatate collective behind Cowboy Bebop. “We love artists who are wildly unique and unapologetically themselves,” says Fa. “Their work stops us in our tracks.”
And while they’ve spent most of their working life together, they don’t shy away from quality time outside the studio too. “Our friendship groups overlap, our partners are best friends – we hang out a lot,” says Fa. “We spent so much of our childhood trying to be different, but now we love how intertwined our lives are."
At its heart, their partnership is about deep trust, shared ambition, and a mutual commitment to pushing boundaries – while never forgetting the joy of the work.
“Having someone who truly has your back, who’ll be brutally honest and completely supportive, is rare,” says Fa. “We’ve built something that’s creatively fulfilling – but it’s also just fun. And we get to do it together.”
