DoorDash Canada, in partnership with the WNBA as the league’s sponsor, launched a new film today as part of its ongoing commitment to inspire more Canadian girls to see a future in sports.
The film was created in partnership with the creative agency, No Fixed Address based on the alarming insight from the 2022 Canadian Women & Sport Rally Report that 50% of girls in Canada quit sports before adolescence.
It’s Happening, a 30-second film directed by Vanessa Millado, is anchored in DoorDash Canada’s belief that to strive for a future in sports, girls need to see one. A community-focused, multi-generational celebration of female basketball players brings this guiding principle to life. It’s Happening is a love letter to the girls picking up a basketball for the first time and the women who never let it go as they pursued the sport.
The film moves between moments on and off the court from some of Canada’s best youth leagues and the WNBA, emphasizing that female sport is happening all around us – even if you can’t see it. The film ends with two little girls watching the clip on TV, and the awe on their faces makes clear the impact of watching women deliver.
It’s Happening will debut on the jumbotron of the Scotiabank Arena during the pre-season game between the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx. The game marks the first-ever WNBA game to be played in Canada — a historical moment for the WNBA and the hundreds of thousands of young girls the film was created for.
DoorDash Canada invited the top two Canadian University Women’s teams, the University of Alberta and University of Carlton (Ottawa) women’s basketball, to attend the game and witness this amazing moment live.
Alexis Bronstorph, chief creative officer, No Fixed Address, says: “As a woman and parent to young girls, this campaign’s intentions are powerful. DoorDash Canada is leading the charge toward a more equitable and visible future for women athletes, and finding solutions to keep more young Canadian girls interested in playing sports as they age is an ambition we will always jump at the chance to be part of.”
Further demonstrating its commitment to women and girls in sports, last month DoorDash Canada announced a founding corporate partnership with Project 8 to create opportunities for Canadian women in sports through the development of Canada’s women’s professional soccer league launching in 2025.
