Directing/DP Duo BLOK Joins Circle Roster

Circle has added comedy director/DP duo BLOK - Paul Casey and Richard Jobson - to the roster for exclusive commercial representation in Canada. BLOK are new to the Canadian market and we look forward to teaming up with the country’s best agencies and clients. 

BLOK have recently directed spots for Hendrick’s Gin, Pepsi Max, Virgin Games and Walkers. They use fantastical elements in art direction, set design and a combination of in-camera and post effects to make their storytelling as unique and memorable as possible. The work is very funny (they are comedy directors after all), but it’s set apart in that it’s also wildly imaginative, whimsical and full of magic.

“Being completely honest, we just love pushing the creative as far as we can… or rather, as far as we can get away with! And, that generally means coming up with an unexpectedly fun feeling world, or a hyper-real environment where there’s something magic-real happening within it,” shared Casey and Jobson in a joint statement. “In short, we love making things a bit daft.”

Directing duos work best when the sum is greater than the parts. In BLOK’s case you have two incredibly creative, passionate, knowledgeable and confident storytellers as the foundation, underpinning individual talents in performance (Paul) and cinematography (Rich), offering a uniquely expressive combination when applied to ideas and scripts. 

“Creatively, we collaborate on everything up until the shoot: ideation, the writing, deck building and all the various pre prod responsibilities. Then we split and Rich jumps on the camera and DPs, and I look after the actors. We like to say that Rich looks after the picture and I look after performance.”

Before diving into the world of advertising, BLOK directed long-form TV comedy series worldwide for the BBC, Channel 4, Sky and Netflix. BLOK have been prolific in the 3 years they’ve been directing commercials, not only because of their brilliant potential but also, importantly, because they’re bloody good fun to work with. Bright stars for the bright and comedy-filled future ahead.
